Germany (pronounced /ˈdʒɜrməni/ ( listen)), officially the Federal Republic of Germany (German: Bundesrepublik Deutschland, pronounced [ˈbʊndəsʁepuˌbliːk ˈdɔʏtʃlant] ( listen)), is a country in Central Europe. It is bordered to the north by the North Sea, Denmark, and the Baltic Sea; to the east by Poland and the Czech Republic; to the south by Austria and Switzerland; and to the west by France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The territory of Germany covers 357,021 square kilometers (137,847 sq mi) and is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. With 82 million inhabitants, it accounts for the largest population among the member states of the European Union and is home to the third-largest number of international migrants worldwide.

A region named Germania inhabited by several Germanic peoples has been known and documented before AD 100. Beginning in the 10th century, German territories formed a central part of the Holy Roman Empire that lasted until 1806. During the 16th century, northern Germany became the centre of the Protestant Reformation. As a modern nation-state, the country was first unified amidst the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. In 1949, after World War II, Germany was divided into two separate states—East Germany and West Germany—along the lines of Allied occupation. Germany was reunified in 1990. West Germany was a founding member of the European Community (EC) in 1957, which became the European Union in 1993. It is part of the Schengen zone and adopted the European currency, the euro, in 1999.

Germany is a federal parliamentary republic of sixteen states (Länder). The capital and largest city is Berlin. Germany is a member of the United Nations, NATO, G8, G20, OECD, and the WTO. It is a major power with the world's fourth largest economy by nominal GDP and the fifth largest in purchasing power parity. It is the largest exporter and second largest importer of goods. In absolute terms, Germany allocates the second biggest annual budget of development aid in the world, while its military expenditure ranked sixth. The country has developed a high standard of living and established a comprehensive system of social security. It holds a key position in European affairs and maintains a multitude of close partnerships on a global level. Germany is recognised as a scientific and technological leader in several fields.

How to marry a German citizen while im visiting germany from the US?
Q. I want to marry my girlfriend in Germany, she is a German citizen, I am a US citizen. Can we marry even though i am only there visiting and on a passport only not a particular visa? What is the process?
Asked by Jas0ns Wife - Sat Nov 14 19:19:18 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'm sorry to disappoint, but there is no such thing as a 'Fiance Visa' for Germany. Getting married shouldn't be a problem, it only takes time (quite a bit) and money (a bit, also but not quite as much ;o) ) so have patience. You surely won't get it done during a normal three month vacation visa stay. :/ And you'll probably need assistance from the states (like from your Mom or Dad) to send documentation back and forth if you don't want to keep traveling home yourself every couple of weeks. Now, once you're married, unfortunately that does NOT automatically mean you'll get a permanent resident permit. :/ You can apply for one, and in most cases they are granted. But sometimes they can be denied, too. It mainly depends on where you live ( [cont.]

What kind of relationship does Germany currently have with the United States?
Q. Is Germany our ally right now? If the conditions are right, is there a potential to go to war with them again? What about nuclear power?

A. Germany is one of our strongest allies. We still have bases in Germany, they have no nukes. Germany belongs to NATO, witch has troops in Afghanistan. If we go to war again I'm sure Germany will be on our side.

How did the British respond to the Blitz by nazi Germany in ww2?
Q. How did the British respond to the Blitz by nazi Germany in ww2 between 1940-1941?
Asked by glosoliii - Tue Jun 17 13:52:07 2008 - - 17 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The public attitude was one of stoicism and determination to resist (mush to the surprise of authorities, who expected panic). The Government's response was revenge bombing, and lots of resources for the aircraft industry. The RAF's response was to quickly develop radar-equipped night fighters, the first in the world. These gradually began to shoot down the German aircraft bombing by night. They also worked out how to jam the radio signals that allowed the Germans to bomb accurately. The Blitz largely ended because Hitler transferred his aircraft east for the forthcoming invasion of Russia.
