Drawing is a visual art that makes use of any number of drawing instruments to mark a two-dimensional medium. Common instruments include graphite pencils, pen and ink, inked brushes, wax color pencils, crayons, charcoals, chalk, pastels, markers, stylus, or various metals like silverpoint. An artist who practices or works in drawing may be referred to as a draftsman or draughtsman.

A small amount of material is released onto the two dimensional medium which leaves a visible mark—the process is similar to that of painting. The most common support for drawing is paper, although other materials such as cardboard, plastic, leather, canvas and board, may be used. Temporary drawings may be made on a blackboard or whiteboard, or indeed almost anything. The medium has also become popular as a means of public expression via graffiti art, because of the easy availability of permanent markers.

When drawing, particularly comic book style, what is the proper technique for movement?
Q. I am learning to draw, I'm starting with pencil with the intention of moving on to pen and ink. I have recently learned that when writing I should try to keep my wrist and fingers still and use my forearm and shoulder more, is this the same with drawing? I would like to know early on so I don't need to fix it later.

A. This will be subjective for alot of people, but here are some good habits you can develop. Your drawing area or board should be positioned so that you are looking at it head on and not at an angle. The more extream the angle of your drawing area is, the more distortion will occure. Keep in mind to keep your head straight, tilting it from side to side will change perspectives. Learning to draw from the elbow is important. You wont ever give up your wrist and finger movments for the details of a drawing, but broad, longer and more expresive strokes, can really only be done well , and consistantly through the use of your entire arm and not just the wrist or fingers. Good practice would be to get learge newsprint paper, and keeping wrist… [cont.]

How can I start a business drawing portraits?
Q. I'm an art major in college, and I'd like to start a little portrait-drawing business this summer to make some extra cash. How would I go about doing this? Should I make a website? Flyers? How much should I charge for each drawing?

A. You could do it simply as a sole proprietor, if you wanted. You could do a website, but unless someone knows your out there, they may have trouble finding you. VistaPrint offers free business cards you can have printed, if you'd like to pass them out, but may not show people what you can do. If you drew little portraits, I've often seen coffee shops displaying different drawings from independent artists. Perhaps you could offer to hang the painting, and give them a percentage of anything you make on them. In this case, you'd have to charge enough to cover your cost, your time, framing, and make enough for the owner of the place to consider putting your picture up. Perhaps you can even rotate the pieces of art between different shops too.… [cont.]
