In geography, a country is a geographical region. The term is often applied to a political division or the territory of a state, or to a smaller, or former, political division of a geographical region. Usually, but not always, a country coincides with a sovereign territory and is associated with a state, nation and government.

The country can also mean the countryside, as opposed to the city.

In common usage, the term country is used in the sense of both nations and states, with definitions varying. In some cases it is used to refer both to states and to other political entities, while in some occasions it refers only to states It is not uncommon for general information or statistical publications to adopt the wider definition for purposes such as illustration and comparison.

Some cohesive geographical entities, which were formerly sovereign states, are commonly regarded and referred to still as countries; such as England, Scotland and Wales – in the United Kingdom. Historically, the countries of the former Soviet Union and Yugoslavia were others. Former states such as Bavaria (now part of Germany) and Piedmont (now part of Italy) would not normally be referred to as "countries" in contemporary English. The degree of autonomy of non-state countries varies widely. Some are possessions of states, as several states have overseas dependencies (such as the British Virgin Islands, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and American Samoa), with territory and citizenry distinct from their own. Such dependent territories are sometimes listed together with independent states on lists of countries, and may be treated as a "country of origin" in international trade, as Hong Kong is. Some countries are divided among several states, such as Silesia and Kurdistan.

What is the nicest country in terms of landscape in the UK / GB ?
Q. I reckon Scotland is the best country in terms of beauty of the landscape. There is the endless Lochs, Munro's, Waterfalls and fantastic mountains and scenery in the top half of Scotland (the Highlands region). The coastline around Scotland seems to have so much more in wildlife and beauty also than other parts of the UK. Wales and Ireland are nice also but Scotland has so much more. England has some lovely places and things to see also of course but the vast majority of England seems to be bland and flat to me. I am interested to hear if other people agree, or to put forward their argument for other countries. So what do you think is the nicest country in terms of landscape in the UK / GB?

A. Islamic states don't send much of anything to the Palestinians. Iran and Syria send a lot of money - millions a year. That aside, the Arab nations are not overly fond of the Palestinians. Jordan won't allow them in because when she did, they caused such trouble. Egypt used to 'occupy' Gaza, pre 1967; she mined the borders so the Palestinians could not leave and of course today, Egypt has a massive wall to stop Palestinians getting in. That says a lot! As for 'israeli occupation' - since Israel left Gaza almost five years ago, there is no such thing in that area. Israel only goes into areas to stop terrorism. Other than that she is only too happy to leave the Palestinians to their own devices - which involve teaching four year olds to… [cont.]
