Furniture (probably from the French 'fournir' — to provide) is the mass noun for the movable objects ('mobile' in Latin languages) intended to support various human activities such as seating and sleeping in beds, to hold objects at a convenient height for work using horizontal surfaces above the ground, or to store things. Storage furniture such as a nightstand often makes use of doors, drawers, shelves and locks to contain, organize or secure smaller objects such as clothes, tools, books, and household goods. (See List of furniture types.)

Furniture can be a product of design and is considered a form of decorative art. In addition to furniture's functional role, it can serve a symbolic or religious purpose. Domestic furniture works to create, in conjunction with furnishings such as clocks and lighting, comfortable and convenient interior spaces. Furniture can be made from many materials, including metal, plastic, and wood. Furniture can be made using a variety of woodworking joints which often reflect the local culture.

What living room furniture are good for a high shedding dog?
Q. I have an elderly Jack Russell dog who sheds terribly. I am in the market for some new furniture and I would like to know what furniture would stand up to teenagers and an elderly dog whose habits I do not intend to break. Also, I would like to not break the bank on price and I do not want a sleeper sofa. I am not opposed to leather.

A. leather or something similar. if you have a fabric that's not smooth, the dog hair can get caught in it and be extremely hard to remove.

How do I divide an estate of furniture when one wants one piece of furniture and the others want to sell all?
Q. I am executor of my dad's will. Property to be divided equally between 3. All he had was furniture. Estate auction and divide the money was my plan. Now, my sister wants one piece of furniture. Do I get that one piece appraised, sell the rest? What if the rest of the furniture sells for less than that one piece appraised for?

A. Just a thought here. What you could do is go and put it all up for auction. Make it where the person that wishes to have the one piece of furniture be the one allowed to bid on that particular piece and no other family member or those receiving the inheritance. What this person pays for the item go into the grand total which is to be split between all individuals involved -- including the one that bid on the item. The person that got the piece of furniture is still allowed their 1/3 of the estate -- it's as if that person was any other bidder. The person that receives that furniture does get a third of the money, but 2/3 of what they paid for the furniture goes to the inheritors.

How do you arrange home office furniture?
Q. I have a square room with large windows on the south wall, a smaller window on the east wall, a closet on the north wall, and an empty east wall. I have a large bookcase, a small cabinet, and two desks I am trying to arrange to be practical but not overwhelm and crowd the room, especially since it's all dark wood furniture. I've tried angling some of the pieces, separating the desks, putting the desks together to increase my workspace . . . I'm just confusing myself? Any suggestions? And please don't suggest those furniture arranging programs, I'd really just like to hear people's actual visions for arranging the furniture. Thank you!

A. How about putting one desk under the south window...then use the 2nd desk to form an L shape...(unless a 2nd person will be using this desk). If 2 people will be using the desks, put them under the south windows facing each other. Then put the large bookcase on the east wall... under the window or beside it...with the small cabinet on the north wall (by the closet door). With this arrangement, you can see out both windows and the door. Have you thought about painting the desks a lighter color so the room won't be full of dark wood?
